A Major VPS Revamp

Posted in Techno Stuffs on September 28th, 2006

Last weekend, I decided to make some major changes to my VPS. It’s really major since I also decided to change my OS. I also moved on to using other services which I think would either be more secure, efficient, or just simply for me to learn new stuffs on Linux. It took me quite some time to build up all the services due to my day job, and right now there are still a couple of personal websites I haven’t restored but hopefully I can have everything up and running by the end of this week.

To summarize the things I’ve done, here are a couple of overviews of the major changes I worked on:

First Week At Work

Posted in Techno Stuffs on September 12th, 2006

My first week at work with my new job isn’t really that exciting. Most of the time, I am reading long documents to introduce me to the company policies, products, and software architectures being used in the company. I must say that everything is new to me. I even find the company policies quite strict as for someone who came from a small organization. On the brighter side, at least I would be able to build new skills and competence as well as learn to adjust in the corporate environment.

Generally speaking, my first week is boring considering that when I arrive in the office I’m not really sure what am I suppose to do. Everyone’s busy with their respective projects while I am busy trying to find stuffs to do. I have a training plan, but considering that everyone around me is busy with their work, it can’t be followed on a daily basis. Since no one is available to train me or help me out with things I just tried to make the most of my time here while waiting for a really challenging task to learn as much as I can to get me up to speed with my team. Microsoft OS and products are dominant here so as a Linux guru and open source afficionado, I’m considered a newbie.

I’m sure this won’t be the case later on or let’s say a few weeks from now, but right now.. life here is really, really boring .. :(

New Axe Station

My new workplace. It’s still bare but very comfortable. Especially the chair! I felt so dumb with the chair not knowing what to do with the adjustments. It’s good though that I arrived early in the office to learn how to make the most of it and adjust it the way that would be most comfortable for me. Aside from the usual height adjustments, there were also knobs to adjust the angle and resistance of the lower back and upper back support. :D

Moreover, I was surprised with the power of my PC. It’s a branded Dell desktop that comes with 2 x Intel Core Duo 2.8 Ghz processor (yup it’s a dual CPU machine .. whoohooh!), 2GB of RAM and 160GB hard disk. It’s really fast.. really, really fast! ;) Sad to say I only have a CDROM and the graphics card is built-in with the motherboard. Oh well, as if I would be able to play games and watch DVD here.. hehehehehe! :D

First Day High

Posted in Techno Stuffs on September 4th, 2006

Today is my first day of work for my new company. Generally speaking, I felt like a high school freshman going to a new school, not knowing anybody and very anxious trying to cope up with my new environment. That’s the reason for the title of this post. ;)

Well, the morning started with the usual HR orientation stuffs regarding security policy and basic company policies. It was pretty informative since I was able to learn a lot of rules and regulations in the corporate setup. I must admit that I felt like the rules on LAN/WAN and Internet usage are quite strict and it may take me some time to adjust. Unlike in my previous work, wherein I am in charge of network connectivity and servers, this time I am merely a user since there’s an IT department handling all those things.

In the afternoon, after lunch I get to talk to the IT director for some orientation (again!), regarding my job description, tasks, and some introductions on the department I’ll be working with which is the Product Development Department. Basically, I’ll be working under her (yes, the IT director is a woman… go girl power!) ;)as a Senior Software Engineer with the specific task as a Builds and Deployment Manager. She was really nice, and very accomodating. Even if she’s the highest ranking person in the department, it’s so easy to talk to her and she even jokes around making me feel comfortable to discuss with her some questions and clarifications I have regarding my work. Her words regarding their plans for me are very inspiring. I really felt like that the future would be bright for me as long as I give my best. Prior to me starting with the company, she had already organized how I would move on with my career and already have plans of expanding the scope of my job and rank as well. That’s really cool! ;)

The IT Director then introduced me to my Project Manager to whom I’ll be directly be reporting to. This guy is no different from from the IT Director since he’s also very accomodating and seems to be very approachable. Well he introduced me to the other members of the team and I think I’m cool with the team members. They are all smiles and very friendly. :D

I was surprised when my PM introduced me to the QA Manager since he discussed something about the “Team of Peers”. I’m not familiar with the term but he said that I’m a member of this Team of Peers which basically are the decision makers in the Product Development Department. There would be 5 of us, the Software Architect, Project Manager, QA Manager, Development Manager, and me. Whoah! This is cool! (I said to myself). This somehow means that I’m in a senior level wherein I have a say in the company, and would be able to influence how my department would be dealing with product development. In short, I’m up, up, and away in the corporate ladder! This is my chance to fulfill my goals! ;)

After all the orientations and introductions, I proceeded with the boring part…reading product introductory materials, watching videos on business ethics, and then read again. Geesh! I really felt so sleepy while reading stuffs but I really think reading those docs is really important to help me get jump started with my new job.

Well, it was really a busy day.. not so fun, but very fruitful! ;)
