On Working At Home
Posted in Techno Stuffs on May 12th, 2007
Since I started working at home more than a month ago, I experienced a lot of changes or adjustments with my way of living, both personally and career-wise. Many of the people I know thinks that this is a dream job or the perfect setup for a job, considering that you earn a lot while working at your own pace and place. Well, it may be true at some point, but then again, the truth is “Nothing’s perfect”. Everything always comes with some flaws in one way or another and that doesn’t spare a work at home setup. Here’s a list of the pros and cons of a work at home job based on my experience.
PROS:
- Work at your own time and your own pace and not tied up to the common 8 hours office job.
- Work anywhere you want as long as you have access to an internet connection.
- No personal pressure from bosses or colleagues.
- A lot of time to do other extra-curricular activities or hobbies of your choice.
- More quality time with family.
- No need to travel to the office.
- You can wear anything you want, or even wear nothing while working (but I really haven’t tried this but some people I know dream of this)
CONS:
- No colleagues to talk with, have fun with, or go out with after a hard day’s work.
- You are in-charge of your own taxes, medical benefits, etc. (well on the taxes part, it can be part of the pros if you decide not to pay your taxes which you can actually do)
- Dealing with a lot of distractions (children, the urge to sleep or watch movies, etc.)
- No company events to attend to such as outings or sports fest.
- Difficulty to apply for a loan or services that requires proof of income or a stable job.
As you can see, in my case the pros outweighs the cons. Honestly speaking, my biggest challenge when I started working at home are the distractions. It took me quite some time to finally settle down and gain that discipline to overcome those distractions and concentrate with work. It’s not that easy but nevertheless I kicked it off. Right now, my adjustment period is over and I am finally able to adapt to my new working condition. Just last week, I even got the chance to finish work within 4 days so I had the 3 remaining days of the week as vacation time. Next time I might even try to finish work in 3 days. We’ll see! ![]()
It may be true that “Nothing’s perfect!”, but then again perfection comes from our own views and our way of accepting things as they are. Well, in my case I guess I found the perfect work setup and I really hope I would be able to make things work for the many years to come. ![]()
