I recently obtained another VPS in order to have a separate server for pet projects and experimental Linux stuffs without affecting my websites or other services I host (e.g. subversion, squid proxy, etc.). I decided to get a VPS with much lower specs than my existing VPS (10GB disk space and 128MB RAM). I don’t think I would need that much disk space and RAM for my websites, mostly consist of blogs and forums as they are not really resource intensive considering the amount of traffic it currently gets.

Once my sites were migrated to the new VPS, ideas came in on what I wanted to try on with 2 VPS. I had always wanted to replicate MySQL DB servers and now I got the time and the resources to do so. Here’s the site where I found the very basic way of doing MySQL Database Replication .

The only difference of what I actually did compared with the tutorial was that I replicated all of the databases in my MySQL master server onto my slave server hosted onto another network. Another thing that was not mentioned in the site which I’m not sure would be the case for other people would be to grant the replication user the RELOAD and SUPER privileges on the master server.

It didn’t took me that long to setup things (just around 3o minutes), and I never really thought that it was so easy. Well, this is just the basics, but a good starting point. Next in my todo list is to implement load balancing or fault-tolerant services with my 2 VPS. ;)
