I recently got a very tempting offer for an office job or in other words another shot to work in the corporate world. The offer was “tempting” in a sense that it’s a promising career, the pay is very good, and all the compensations and benefits included in the package is one of the best in the local IT industry. The job offer really made me think twice about my current job, especially in terms of the benefits me and my family would get from it, or even just add this office job to my existing work at home job for more financial and career rewards.
After much thinking and reflection, I decided to turn down the offer for the simple reason that I am already happy with my current job and I just can’t leave it for now. Moreover, if I get too greedy and take on 2 jobs, then I’m afraid there would be times that I would need to down prioritize one employer over another if one of them would require most of my time and attention. It wasn’t easy to turn down the offer, but then again it’s just a matter of knowing what really makes you happy and just doing good with what you have.
There may be a lot of uncertainties about my work at home job, especially in terms of job security since I am not covered by local labor laws that would protect me against work issues with my employer. I am also missing a lot of benefits (e.g. life insurance, medical insurance, allowances, car, etc.) for me and my family by not working in the usual office job, but then I am still willing to risk it all for now. Personally speaking, the pros of my current job outweighs the cons. I may not have all the benefits and job security that the corporate world my offer, but then I am able to work in a stress-free environment at my own time and place. I may not have a promising career to go up in the corporate ladder and be one of the top management in the future, but just knowing that I am getting better with what I love to do each day and having fun in the process would already make me feel proud. I don’t give a damn if some of the people I know would look down at me by the time they become bosses, and I would still be in my quite corner programming, since titles and corporate achievements are not that important for me anymore. Besides, I don’t compete with other people for I only have myself to compete with. ![]()
Aphilo also decided to resign from her work and just focus on her small business and do some of the things she had longed for doing (e.g. photography, travelling, etc.) . I had reservations with her decisions, but when she told me that she just wanted to make the most of her life while she has the chance to do so, and do the things she couldn’t do if she’s tied up with an 8Am-5PM day job, justifies it all. Luckily, this is the best time to do it while I am earning enough for our financial needs, and we can be at home together to take care of the kids. At least now I don’t have to drive her to and from the office and suffer from those stressful traffic jams. ![]()
Simple living had always been my ideal way of life. As always, the relaxing coffee moment in the morning, and a lazy afternoon with my family would surely make life worthwhile. Now I can be truly earning while doing what I love to do, and being with the people that I treasure most. So “Goodbye Corportate World”. I am not ending the chance of going back .. so let me just add.. “for now” ..
