I had been into virtualization for quite some time now. When I was still a PC user, I had tried playing around with VMWare Player and VMWare workstation under Windows. It was quite an experience then. Just the mere fact that you are able to tinker around with different operating systems without having to reformat and re-install everything on your PC was such a cool thing. This allowed me to run Linux distros under Windows for work and play. When I shifted to being a Mac user last year (which by the way I am very happy I did), I had used VMWare Fusion to continue my journey on virtualization. Currently, I have CentOS 5 for Java development and Windows Vista for testing apps under Fusion. My MacBook Pro seems to handle it pretty well. ;)

Now I tried to get more serious and finally got the chance to see how Virtual Private Servers (VPS) works. I had been a VPS user for several years, and just lately when I got some money to spare for a dedicated server, I decided it’s time to learn the trade on hosting a VPS node. Having a dedicated server is not that cheap, but I was lucky to find a good deal for a dedicated server with the following specifications:

AMD 64 X2 4600+ / 2GB RAM / 250GB SATA Drive / 10Mbps unmetered bandwidth

Though it’s not really a high-end enterprise server, it still has enough horse power to host several VPS instances. ;)

I am now playing around with Xen, OpenVz, and VMWare Server for Linux under CentOS 5 64-bit and I’m really having fun learning stuffs on configuration and optimization of a VPS node. This is one great advantage of having a dedicated server since you have “total control” of your server in its real sense.

If things go well, I guess I would be able to add VPS hosting to my current web hosting business offerings and create some income flow that would help me pay up my dedi server bills. We’ll see how it goes. :)
