For some reasons, the intermittent disconnects on BayanTel SkyDSL connection coupled with my Linksys WRT54G router’s failure to auto-reconnect had given me so much headache for several weeks. It just doesn’t seem right that each time I lose my internet connection, I would need to go to the Linksys web admin page and initiate a manual reconnection sequence. Damn! This is not how things are supposed to work. I had browsed through a lot of sites tackling about the auto-reconnect issues on Linksys and haven’t found a single hint as to how to make it work. If anyone out there have a viable solution, then I would really appreciate if you can post it here.

I don’t think BayanTel would also find a good solution to my problem as their tech team already paid me a visit, and even changed my modem and re-wired my telephone line, but it didn’t make any difference. I just got tired of having to call them almost everyday and explain to them my problem, especially if you have to wait for such a long time to get hold of a tech person through their hotline. All they seem to do is to reset my port from their data center and ask me to call again if the problem persists. They just can’t seem to make things right.

So to make the long story short, being a Linux administrator just have to kick-in and do things my way. I decided to directly connect the DSL modem to my Linux server and configure PPPoE on the ethernet interface connected to the modem. Then I installed and configured Shorewall firewall to protect both my server and home network while giving my home computers/notebooks access to the internet. The significant action here is to write a script that would detect an internet disconnect and then force a PPPoE redial to re-establish an internet connection. Basically, the script would just ping a site (e.g. www.google.com) every 30 seconds, and if there’s no ping response (pong) received it would initiate a PPPoE redial. This had worked great so far. Not only am I able to have total control of my LAN’s internet access such as setting up a web proxy server for my home network and tweaking network speeds for faster throughputs, but I don’t have to worry about disconnecting and reconnecting my DSL connection during BayanTel’s frustrating internet connection problems as well. Now I can go on working all day without having to worry about my internet connection, since my linux server sidekick takes over this task for me.

As the saying goes, “If you can’t beat them, then join them”, or rather “cope with them”. ;)

    Ulysses,

Thank you so much for taking time to post here in my blog and providing me withy your contact info. I’ll be contacting you regarding my problems with your services one of these days. Sad to say, the disconnects are becoming more frequent now, especially early in the morning.

    Bernard,

First of all, don’t call me “sir”. Just plain “hyperaxe” would do. ;)

I’m afraid I don’t have a script that would do the auto-reconnect on a windows xp machine. If I’m not mistaken though, Windows XP should be able to handle the auto-reconnect with a couple of network config tweaks if your DSL modem is connected directly to it. If you are using a router, then there might be some workaround we can do depending on what router model you are using.

SkyDSL had maintenance yday in Novaliches area and since then, internet has been disconnecting frequently when using my wireless router. Didn’t change any settings, just that every time i connect via wireless, connection drops when i start downloading, especially torrents. I dnt understand why this happened. when i called tech support, they told me that the dsl is working and it must be my router. i wonder why there wasnt any problem before their maintenance … which lasted for almost 6 hrs.

    Hi Kat,

Just to clarify, is it your wireless signal dropping, meaning your PC/laptop cannot connect to the wireless network or is it your modem disconnecting from the Internet? If it’s the latter (wireless signal dropping), then there might be some problem with your router so I suggest you either move your wireless router to a better location for your PC/laptop to receive a good signal or try connecting directly to your router or modem to test things out.

If it’s your modem disconnecting from the internet, then we have the same case. Until now, my internet connection has still been so intermittent especially on rainy days. I’ve tried calling their technical support numerous times but still the problem is there especially when it’s raining.

    Hope this helps. :)

Hi hyperaxe, can you share the script you made and how do i run it. I’m newbie when it comes to linux since I only used it this year. I’m currently using fedora, but my knowledge in linux is rather limited. Thanks in advance! ^_^
