VMWare Server 2.0 Web Admin

For some reasons, VMWare dropped the server console on VMWare Server 2.0 and replaced it with a web based admin interface. The web GUI is pretty cool as it provides a lot of information regarding the host and guest OS. It also provides a browser plugin that allows you to connect to your guest OS console. Then again, I still miss the server console application since it is far more stable on different OS including Mac OS X. Just red on to know why.

One annoying thing though with the web interface is that you can’t use it for most of the browsers. Under Windows I had problems using it with IE6 since the plugin for console access just won’t install. I managed to make it run on IE7 though as well as Firefox 2.x and 3.0. But yesterday, when I upgraded Firefox to 3.0.1 VMWare’s browser plugin won’t install. I hope VMWare releases a plugin update that would work with Firefox’s latest version.

For Mac users like me, I’m sorry to tell you that the plugin don’t work on Safari. Under Firefox, I also had no luck making it work on versions 3.0 and 3.0.1. So right now, in order to manage my VMWare Server under Mac OS X, I had to use Windows or Linux guest under VMWare Fusion. I just hope that the next VMWare Server 2.0 update would be able to support Safari or Firefox on Mac OS.
