My Thoughts on iPhone 3G

Just last week, I got the chance to play around with an iPhone 3G from a local store. I was pretty impressed by the user interface and it features. For me it seems like a Nokia 95 on steroids, considering it’s also able to access the internet over Wi-Fi or the 3G network, and it comes with a built-in GPS receiver, but of course with the more stronger points of a touch screen, and the cool Apple UI trademark.

Globe Telecoms launched it a couple of weeks ago, so I tried to inquire about the price, and sad to say Globe really designed a business model pricing to get more money out of it. It’s really a lot more expensive compared with AT&T’s offer so I’m not really sure what are the specific factors that made Globe offer this cool gadget at such prices or plans. So considering the price, you really have to think a lot if this gadget is worth that hard earned money of yours.

In my case, I may be able to pull out some resources to acquire one, but I decided not to. You ask, why? My answer is simple, “I don’t need one“. It’s true that owning this device would definitely give you that “Wow”,”You’re cool!” comments, and envious looks from the people around you because as far as I know this is truly one of the coolest mobile gadget out in the market today. So for those which this kind of scenario is what matters most with the things they want to spend their money with, then I rest my case on them. But for those who are more of doing a balance check between needs and financials, then we might be on the same wave length of thinking.

The iPhone 3G truly offers a lot of interesting features, especially on the Internet and Email connectivity side, but I tried to think hard if these cool stuffs fits my lifestyle so as to see if it’s worth buying. Sad to say, it does NOT. I only use my mobile phone to send SMS messages and do voice calls. Seldom do I check my email since it’s quite expensive to do so considering the local telco charges on data services, and my work doesn’t require me to reply to emails the soonest time possible. My email and Internet needs can all be confined at times when I am infront of my notebook working.

On the aesthetics side, the iPhone’s UI interface and over-all built is the best I’ve ever seen. This is not something new from Apple, since when I started using the iPod and MacBook Pro, I had always been amazed on how the Apple developers had thought well and implemented flawlessly the UIs and design of their devices. Then come to think of it, what can I get with such cool interface. I mean, my old Nokia 6230i does the job well on the interface side and for making communication easier for me. I don’t think having a touch screen mobile phone with cool animated icons, can speed up or improve my SMS and voice call needs. It’s cool to have a good looking mobile phone, but it’s not something of necessity for me.

I don’t see myself getting the iPhone anytime soon. With it’s current price (thanks to Globe), I rather just save the money for something that I would truly need. I may not be able to get that “Wow” and “You’re cool!” comments from the people around me, but I don’t really give a damn for it. It’s better for me to be on the low profile side with a hefty amount of cash in the pocket that go with the flow in gadget trends with empty pockets. ;)
