For a few weeks now. I’ve been trying to learn Objective-C in preparation for an upcoming project wherein I would need to write applications for the iPhone. So to help me get started I started reading up this book called “Programming in Objective-C by Stephen Kochan“. I decided to just get the eBook version from EBooks since it might be a lot easier for me to do hands-on programming while reading the book through my laptop.
I would really recommend this book for Objective-C beginners, and you don’t even need to learn C or C++ as a pre-requisite on learning Objective-C as what the author of the book emphasized in the beginning chapters. In my case, I know a bit of C but it doesn’t really matter while reading it. But if you already know OOP (Object Oriented Programming) Languages such as Java, (which I think I have a good background of) or C#, then it wouldn’t take you that much time to understand the first few chapters of the book. I even found it a bit boring since it’s like a repetition of things I already know, but nevertheless I learned some new terminologies and sort of a refresher course I guess.
The last few chapters of the book was definitely the most useful parts for me. I really liked the way the author introduced the Framework Foundation as well as in-depth discussion about the Class usage in Objective-C. Sad to say, the book didn’t touch up on graphic user interface development so I still need to do a bit of research and hands-on experience on that part for iPhone app development. Then again, the book provides a solid foundation to help anyone get started on Objective-C and it’s just up to you to use the knowledge that this book gives to learn more and move on to much advance development topics and practices. In my case, I guess it’s just good to know that I’m a step further on Objective-C and just can’t wait to see my first iPhone app which I had started working on. ![]()
