Just a few weeks ago, I started considering again to purchase an iPhone 3G since I was able to get my hands on friends unit and found the interface being so cool. Besides, adding iPhone development to my credentials might be useful cool and learning more on Objective-C application development would be quite fun when you are able to test to an actual unit. Then again, something held up my decision and this is the inability of the iPhone to natively support 3G or Wi-Fi network tethering or in layman’s term using it as a bluetooth or USB modem for your laptop when on the go.
I tried to research more about this and somehow had confirmed that it’s true. There are ways to actually make iPhone work as a 3G Bluetooth modem such as installing the NetShare app or jailbraking (hacking) the OS. Installing an application such as NetShare would be more acceptable rather than hacking your unit, since the latter would void your warranty with Apple and your mobile services provider. But still, I am not sure if NetShare would be user friendly or if it would function well since it would only acts as a SOCKS5 proxy. Besides, it was removed twice from the Apple AppStore and I’m also not sure if it has been placed back. I’m not sure why Apple did it, but it’s clear that they seem to discourage the use of the iPhone as a bluetooth or mobile internet modem in general. You can of course download it from other sources such as torrents maybe or some other people who are generous enough to share it. Or if you are the type that have the guts to defy warranties or doesn’t really care breaking your unit, then go for the OS hack.
This is another turn-off for me on the iPhone so I am still going to stay with my more reliable N95 for my mobile internet or computing needs. Not only does it work well with my Macbook Pro, but it also does provide me most of my internet and GPS needs when I am on the go. Even though iPhone is such a cool mobile device, due to its interface, stability, and seamless synchronization with my MBP, I still think it’s not worth the price with its current limitations. Moreover, I don’t want to spend a lot of money if an eye candy device is just what I need. Sorry iPhone, I guess we won’t be able to jive together … at least for now. ![]()

Thanks for the tip, sir. Now it seems like there are still some issues that Apple needs to resolve not only with their software but their hardware as well.
